The village of Marsden originated from the 1870,s for to provide homes for the growing mining community who worked at Whitburn Colliery.

Within the village were 135 houses, Miners Institute, a Methodist Church and Post Office.  To support approx 700 inhabitants there was also a Co-op sore together with a school.

The Colliery closed in 1968 which marked the beginning of the end of the village. Around 20 years earlier in the 1950,s people were beginning to move into new housing in Whitburn and surrounding areas leaving Marsden Village ,which was in grave danger of slipping into the sea. Being right on the coast edge erosion damage to the cliffs was becoming a real threat.

The closest pub was the Marsden Inn which was located on the top road .

An alternative was the Grotto in Marsden Bay just past the Marsden lime kilns.
heading north towards South Shields.
