Todays meeting welcomed Lee Stephenson from City of Sunderland Council. Lee gave a wonderful talk on Glorious Victorian Glasshouses. Supported by a slide show Lee explained that they came into existance during those times when we started bringing back to England tender exotic plants that would not stand our weather conditions.
From the Temperate Palm House in Edinburgh to The Old Greenhouse at Gibside Lee , who has visited most discribed the fundemental differences. He went on to explain how construction has changed over the years cumulating at the Davies Alpine House at Kew and our own Winter Gardens at Sunderland.
Sybil Reeder introduced George Wright, from Boldon History who described how there group works and invited us to their next meeting held in the Roberts room, Community Centre next to Boldon School on the last Tuesday of the month at 6.30 pm. George is also responsible for the introduction of Whitburnonline , the local community website.
